Why do we need a Savior Article 9 Part 2 of 3

March 14, 2016

Reverence to our God and Savior

Psalm 46:1-6

“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake as its swelling place.  There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the Holy dwelling places of the most high.  God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns, the nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.  The Lord of Hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold”.

Purpose of the plagues and Passover.

The purpose of the Passover is to get Israel in step with God, so that Israel would see the personal works of God in their behalf.  To show the Egyptians that God was the ruler of the universe and regardless of what gods they believed in, they had no power over the God of all creation.  It was to show the Egyptians the the gods they worshiped and believed in were false and not equal to the living God. God wanted to show the Egyptians the plagues He put on them would have no effect on the Hebrews that lived in the land of Goshen.    God wanted to show the Egyptians that their man-made gods would have no effect upon what God has started through the Egyptian list of gods.  After living in the land for 430 years, Israel knew the gods of the Egyptians and what they stood for.  When Moses and Aaron wet before the elders and performed the miracles that God has shown them, Israel bowed down and worshiped Him.  God knew exactly how Pharaoh was going to react to each plague.  God said in these chapters that God hardened Pharaohs heart, time after time rendering Pharaoh helpless to stop them, Pharaoh was significant to the plagues.  God wanted everybody to know that He has all the knowledge and power to control every situation and response.

There is another aspect of this.  The redemption of Israel.  God had completed the buildup of those nations of Esau.  But God said He remembered the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac. and Jacob.  Moses showed the Israelite’s the miracles that God had shown him at the burning bush.  God also said the I have seen your affliction and the people bowed low to worship God.  God will start a new nation with Israel, redemption to worship and serve the Lord God.  God in His wisdom and timing has brought His people to the front of all the nations, and over the next 40 years, these nations would learn more and more about Israel and their God.  Only the Lord can free people of bondage and sin.  Most people are not capable of looking at themselves and thinking that I am a flawed person that needs help.  The older you get the more set you are in your ways.  Then it takes a shaking of ones life so that person can see what needs to be done.  God works from the inside out.  It is the inside that can really be rotten.  What is inside comes out to the surface for all to see.  That is why we need a savior.

This was the first meeting between Pharaoh and Moses and Aaron.  Moses said, the Lord God said let My people go!  When Pharaoh heard this he said, “Who is the Lord that I should listen to Him”  Then Moses had Aaron throw his staff down and it turned into a serpent.  Pharaoh called for his magicians, and sorcerers, they threw their staffs down and they turned into serpents.  Then Moses serpent ate the serpents of the magicians.  The plagues are directed to what the Egyptians believed in their gods.  The Egyptians believed that Pharaoh was god, directly descended from Ra.  Ra is the Egyptian sun God.  Now you understand why Pharaoh answered Moses the way he did.

First Plague:  Blood            Exodus 7:14-25

Moses said to Aaron, raise your staff, turn the river Nile into blood, also along with the other rivers, streams, lakes, resovoirs, stone and wood pots of water.  Then Pharaoh called the magicians in to duplicate the plague.  The magicians were able to duplicate it.  But, the problem was the magicians added to the problem, but they could not undo the plague.  The blood plague lasted for seven days.  There was a stench in Egypt because of all the rotting fish and the other things that live in a river that died.

The god Osiris, the people thought the the Nile was his bloodstrem.  The Nile was the main source of water to Egypt, for drinking water, for man and animal, bathing, irrigation, and fishing.  Their God Khnum, was the guardian of the rivers source.  Now the Egyptians could not do anything, because their gods could not protect the Nile.  Moses said to Pharaoh, “God says let my people go”!

Second Plague: Frogs            Exodus 8:1-15

The Lord said to Moses, tell Pharaoh to let My people go, that they may serve Me, but if you refuse to let them go I will smite your territory with frogs.  They will be all over the land, in your houses, bedrooms, beds, ovens, kneading bowls, in servants house, and your people.  Moses told Aaron to stretch forth his hand and cover the land of Egypt with frogs.  Pharaohs magicians through their magic arts duplicated the frogs.  The thing they could not do is reverse the plague of frogs.  Once again they made the problem worse.  Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and asked them to “entreat the Lord that He remove the frogs from me and my people, and I will let the people go”.  Moses asked Pharaoh when would he like me to entreat the Lord, and Pharaoh said tomorrow.  Pharaoh doesn’t seem all that concerned.  Moses went out from Pharaoh and entreated God and the frogs died off, and the people piled the dead frogs into large piles, and they were only in the Nile.  When Pharaoh saw the frogs were gone, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them.  The Lord God had the power to send the frogs, then He had the power to have them die off and smell the country up.

Hapi- is the frog godess of Egypt.  She had a human body with a frog for a head.  Heqt- was the god of fertility.  Again, the Lord was the only remedy.

Third Plague: Gnats            Exodus 8:16-19

Notice this plague God did not have Moses and Aaron to to Pharaoh first.  Moses told Aaron to stretch out his staff and strike the dust of the earth so that there would be Gnats on man and beast of the field.  All the dust of the earth would become gnats on the face of the earth in Egypt.  Pharaoh called his magicians in to duplicate the gnats and they could not.  The magicians said to Pharaoh that this is the finger of God.  But Pharaoh would not listen to them.  I think that it has been interesting that in the bible the spirit world, magicians and sorcerers, they recognize God , but man cannot recognize Him.  God says He is Spirit.  The evil spirits of the magicians and sorcerers do recognize God, and what He can do, and what they can’t do.

Seb- was the earth god of Egypt.

In the new testament the demons as they were being cast of the people, they would talk to Jesus.  The ruling class in Israel at the time of Christ did not want Him to rule over them, so they rejected all the miracles that He did, and wanted to kill Him.  What has always intrigued me, is man so caught up in his own self centered life that he cannot see God for who He is. When He is standing right in front of you. Yes, even me.

Fourth Plague: Flies            Exodus 8:20-32

Again the Lord God said to Moses, Rise early in the morning and meet Pharaoh as he comes out to the water.  That would be the Nile river.  Exodus 7:15  “Let my people go, that they may serve me”.  For if you do not let My people go, I will send swarms of insects upon you, your servants, and your people, into all your houses of the Egyptians, also the ground on which they dwell. They will not be in the land of Goshen on the Hebrews.  Tomorrow this sign shall happen and the land will be laid waste.  Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, go sacrifice to your God within the land of Egypt.  Moses said to Pharaoh that it is not right for us to sacrifice unto their Lord, when the Egyptians find it as an abomination.  They will stone us.  Then Moses said that they have to go three days journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord as He commands.  Pharaoh said go, but you shall go very far.  Pharaoh ask Moses to make supplication for him, and Moses did so.  Pharaoh again hardened  his heart and would no let Israel go.

Khepri- Was the Egyptian god of creation.  Then Uatchit- the fly god of Egypt.  This god had a human body that had a head of a Beattle that they believe moved the sun.

Fifth plague: Disease of livestock            Exodus 9:1-7

God told Moses to go to Pharaoh, “let <y people go, so the may serve Me”.  If you refuse to let them go, I will come with a very severe pestilence the next day.  I will make a distinction , between the Egyptians livestock and the livestock of the Hebrews livestock.  The Egyptian live stock died.  The next day Pharaoh sent an official to look at the livestock of Israel, and the report back, that all their livestock were well and alive.  Again Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.    The Egyptians has a few gods that worked with area, they were.

Ptah- Mnevis- Hathor- Amon.  These Egyptian gods were associated with bulls and cows.  The result of these, the first two affected property.  The last two had to do with the death of livestock.  Hathor was the goddess of love and protection.  She had a woman’s body with clothes to the ankles, but she had the head of a cow.

Characteristics of God, what He has to say about Himself to those who have an open mind and heart.

“Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin, yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.  Exodus 34:6-7 /  If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  I John 1:8-9  / Lamentations 3:22-23  The LORD’S lovingkindness indeed ever cease, for His compassion’s ever fail.  They are new every morning;   Great is the faithfulness.  II Corinthians 12:9  And He has said to me (Paul), My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.  Romans 12:2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed be the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect,  for it is God who is at work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.  Do all things without grumbling or disputing.  Philippians 2:13-14  /Dueteronomy 32:4 The Rock! His perfect work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous ad upright is He”.  NASB

Sixth Plague: Boils            Exodus 9:8-12

Then the Lord told Moses ad Aaron to take for yourselves handfuls of soot from a kiln, then in the sight of Pharaoh throw it toward the sky.  It will become fie dust over all Egypt, anf become boils breaking out with sores on man and beast througout all the land of Egypt, and it did.  The magicians could not stand before moses because of the boils on them and all the Egyptians.  The, the Lord hardened pharaoh’s heart.

There are three gods of the Egyptians in this plague.  Sekhmet- Egyptians goddess of epidemics.  This goddess had a female figure with a human head.  This unannounced plague effected everybody in Egypt, but, it did not effect the Israelite’s.  The magicians could not come to Pharaoh.  With the boils, the magicians were unclean.  You do not see the magicians in the last four plagues.  The only one of the Egyptians that did not have the plague was Pharaoh.  The other two gods were Serapis and Imhotep, they were gods of healing.

Seventh Plague: Hail           Exodus 9:13-35

The Lord God said to Moses, rise up early in the morning and stand before pharaoh and say, “let my people go that they may serve me.”  God says thus says the Lord, now if I had put forth my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, you would then be cut off from the earth.  But, “indeed, for this cause I have allowed you to remain in order to show you My power, and in order to proclaim my name through all the earth”.  You exalt yourself against my people by not letting them go.  Behold, tomorrow I will send a very heavy hail such as has not been seen in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.  Have your men put the livestock in their barns and people in the houses.  Anybody found in the open shall die from the hail.  But Pharaoh paid no attention the the word of The Lord.  All men and beast, every plant of the field through the land of Egypt that were in the open dies.  The trees were all shattered.  Only in the Land of Goshen was there no thunder and hail.  Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come, and he said “Go, serve the Lord, only leave your flocks behind.”  But Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

There are four Egyptian gods in this plague.  Nut was the Egyptian’s sky goddess.  She was U-shaped and blue. ISIS and Seth are the gods of agriculture deities.  Shu is the god of the atmosphere.

Eighth Plague:  Locust        Exodus 10:1-20

Again Pharaoh and his servants hardened their hearts.  God told Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh and in front of his sons and with his grandsons present.  Tell them how The Lord have a mockery of the Egyptians and how I performed my signs and wonders.  That you may know that I am The Lord, let my people go.  If you do not agree, tomorrow I will fill you land full of locust, they shall eat what has escaped the hail, trees which sprout, wheat and barley.  Your houses, your servants’ houses ad the Egyptians’ houses, something that your fathers or grandfathers have not seen from the day they came upon the earth until this day.  Moses turned and went out from Pharaoh, and Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “how long will this man be a snare to us?”  Exodus 10:7  Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God.  Do you not know Egypt is destroyed!  So Moses and Aaron came back to Pharaoh and Pharaoh said go serve the Lord your God and who are the ones going?  Moses said we shall go out with our young and old, sons, daughters, flocks, herds, for we must sacrifice to the Lord.  Pharaoh said, ” thus may the Lord be with you.”  Then Moses and Aaron were driven from the presence of Pharaoh.  So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt and an east wind blew the locust upon Egypt.  Pharaoh hurriedly called for Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you.  Please forgive my sin only this once and make supplication for me and remove this death from me.”  So the Lord shifted the wind and not one locust was left in Egypt.  And the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not let Israel go.

Serapia was the Egyptian god and protector from locusts.  Seth was an Egyptian god of storms and disorder.  It had a human body but had the heard of a locust and its antennas.

Ninth Plague:  Darkness         Exodus 10:21-29

The Lord said to Moses, “stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness which may be felt.”  Exodus 10:22  There was darkness over the land of Egypt for three days.  After Moses told Pharaoh that they wanted to go, Pharaoh hardened his heart and said, “Moses get away from me!  Beware, do not see my face again, for in the day you see my face, you shall die.”  And Moses said, “you are right, I shall never see your face again.”

In Egypt the most worshiped was the was the sun.  There were a few sun gods:  Ra, was the best known.  He had a human body, but over his heard was a large sun and a snake around that.  Amon-re-Atum-Horus were Egyptian sun gods.  Thoth, was the Egyptian moon god.  It became dark in the middle of the day.  The Israelite’s still had light.  The people of Egypt believed that Pharaoh was the sun god and they believed that Pharaoh was a direct descendant of Ra, therefore Pharaoh was God.  With this plague, it showed Pharaoh and the Egyptians that only God of Israel had the power to make it dark during the day, and no moon at night.  It told Pharaoh that he was not god, because he had no power to control anything, let alone the sun and moon.

Tenth plague:  Death Announced          Exodus 11:1-10

Now the Lord said to Moses, one more plague.  After this he will let you go out of Egypt.  When he lets you go, Pharaoh will drive you out of Egypt.  Tell the Hebrew people to ask from their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.  God gave the Hebrews favor in the sight of the Egyptians.  Moses was highly esteemed to the Egyptian people.  Moses said to the people, that God would go out at midnight through the land of Egypt and kill all the first born of man, Pharaoh, the slave girl and the cattle.  A great cry will come from Egypt.  But, against any of the sons of Israel, a dog shall not even bark, whether against man or beast, that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.  God said, “And all these servants will come down to me and bow themselves before me, saying go out, you and all the people who follow you, and after that I will go out.”  Exodus 11:8  And Moses wet out from Pharaoh in hot anger, and the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so My wonders will be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”  Exodus 11:9  Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; yet the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s  heart, and he would not let the sons of Israel go out of his land.

Remember this is just the announcement, death of the first born does not come until after Passover.

First Passover.  The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the beginning of first month of a year to you.  Speak to the congregation of Israel, saying on the 10th of this month they are to take a lamb for themselves according to the fathers households, if a house is smaller, a neighbor nearest you shall join together according to the number of persons.  The lamb will have no flaws in it, you may take from the sheep or goats.  Keep the lamb till the 14th day of the same month.  Then the assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.  They shall take some blood of the lamb and put it on the doorposts and the cross member of the door posts.  Do this so when the Angel of death goes through the land of Egypt, He will go by your house.  The slain lamb shall not be eaten raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire with its legs and head and the entrails.  You shall leave none of it till morning and what ever is left you shall burn with fire.  Now this day shall be a memorial to you and celebrate it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations.  This is a permanent ordinance.  Seven days you shall not eat leavened bread.  The first day you shall remove the leavened bread until the 21st day of the month at evening.  This was the first Passover lamb.  It was for the redemption of Israel.  The lamb was the price of redemption for the people from the land of Egypt.  The lambs blood  was their covering from the Angel of death to pass over them.  The Passover meal was the first meal as a nation of Israel.  The Passover was to be celebrated every year to remind Israel who and why they were brought out of Egypt.  Israel was redeemed by God that day, from 430 years of slavery.  When Jacob and the family moved to Egypt, Joseph was already there because his brothers sold him to traders going to Egypt.  They sold him for 20 pieces of silver.  But Joseph was sent to Egypt so the family would have a place to go in a great famine in that part of the world.  When Jacob went into Egypt with his family there were 70 souls, plus Joseph.  Now, the Israelite’s are ready to leave Egypt with between 1 1/2 to 2 million people.

God is Israel’s savior.  If He had not redeemed them, they would not be in the land.  We are no different.  God said that we are just passing through.  This world is not our home.  Be believing in Him we are His children also.  The only difference is, Jesus Christ is our Passover,  killed and hung on the cross.  He spilled His blood for our redemption.  His blood is our covering from our sin.  Would you join me in rejoicing for our redemption.  If you would like to be a son or daughter of God, fell free to respond, and I will rejoice with you, along with a host of heaven watching.

The rest of the Passover will be completed in April.

Thank you Barnes Bible charts for having information available for use about the plague.
